Diannah Courtney/Haun and Her Sons

This picture of Diannah Courtney/Haun and her sons was sent to me by Mae Courtney Thompson, a granddaughter of JLC. Cousin Mae told me that this is the same picture that she copied for Mrs. Duke when Mrs. Duke was visiting relatives looking for pictures. As you can see, this picture has been badly damaged, not only by a spill, but the upper right corner is missing. If you look at Diannah's lap, you can still make out the black edge of the white fan that she is holding. The fan covers her left hand and wrist. Look at this picture on Mrs. Duke's web page. In post #6633 on James Genforum, Mrs. Duke conceded that "it does appear that the photo in my book has been reversed at some point in time." Also, note that a part of the surface of the picture has flaked off on what is now, after reversal, the right sleeve, several inches above the elbow, and is described as a pin to hold the sleeve shut. All contemporary accounts of the loss of Mrs. Zerelda James' right arm say that the arm was amputated several inches below the elbow.
